Original session produced by Dave Bailey for his Jazztime label. Recorded in 1958-59, What Is There to Say? (Columbia CS8116) showcases the saxophonist in one of his regular piano-less quartets, with Art Farmer on trumpet, Bill Crow on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums again. The LP marks the latter musician’s only existing collaboration with Mulligan. He is accompanied here by drummer Dave Bailey, bassist Ben Tucker, conga drummer Alec Dorsey, and the great pianist Tommy Flanagan. Its eponymous debut, Jeru, was released in 2009. Jeru was featured at the 2004 Chicago Jazz Festival and has held numerous residencies at clubs throughout Chicagoland. A European version of the group that featured members of the WDR Big Band was active while bassist Joe Policastro was living in Germany. The core band consists of Art Davis on trumpet, Ted Hogarth on bari sax, and Joe Policastro on bass.
